The exhibition ‘Not in so many words’ brings together a wide variety of works from the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum, in which words, letters, sentences and text fragments play a prominent role. From word puzzles and poems to philosophical contemplations and political commentary.

Forty language and word artworks
The exhibition features about forty works by artists such as Robert Barry, Marcel Broodthaers, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Jenny Holzer, Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Nauman, Marc Ruygrok and herman de vries. The work on display varies widely, from word puzzles and poems to philosophical contemplations and political commentary. From text subtly incorporated into collages to incisive social statements. A wide range of art forms is included in the exhibition: films, installations, performances, sculptures, neon art, works on paper and paintings.

New work by contemporary language and word artists
At the invitation of the Kröller-Müller Museum, Niels Post (1972), Guido de Boer (1988) and Fillip Studios (Roos Meerman (1991)/Tom Kortbeek (1987)) will create new works in which letters, text and language play an important role. With great dedication and devotion, De Boer analyses the shape of letters and thoroughly analyses typography. In a humoristic and critical tone, Post exposes the noise on the internet using words without meanings. And Fillip Studios uses digital technology to visualise words and sounds from extinct languages.
